A Winding X-Country Trail

We live just up the road from the Lake Ann Pathway - a small run of cross country ski trails that take you past the rolling waters of the Platte River and the quiet solitude of Lake Ann, as well as few other smaller lakes. Our first winter here we decided to try cross country skiing - I mean, it's practically right out our back door - so why not give it shot? We borrowed some skis from friends and took to the trails. Given that my husband and I are fairly athletic, I assumed that we'd catch on quickly. Making assumptions is not a good idea when your feet are strapped into a pair of long skinny flat wooden sticks. Only now do I wish I had read the review of the Pathway at traverseguide.com that states: "It's not a good system for beginners". Yeah - information I could have used 3 years ago. See, there are all these hills. And these hills, although a great workout on the way up, they are scarey as blankety-blank on the way down. Because, see, there are these trees - EVERYWHERE - all along the path which at the time seemed no more that 6 inches wide! Thankfully, neither of us broke anything - although I was tempted to break the skis just to have an excuse to walk back to the car. Not long after that day, we bought snow shoes and absolutely love trekking through the snow rather than gliding (or in our case, tumbling).

For more information on the Lake Ann Pathway and the many other wonderful trails for snowshoeing and cross country I recommend this site which also includes a handy map of the area.
