One of the benefits of living in Michigan - fresh water everywhere! First and foremost are the big lakes - Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Superior and Erie. Here in northwest Michigan we lay claim to beautiful Lake Michigan. From the beaches and the sailing waters of the Grand Traverse Bay, to the open waters off the mouth of the Platte River where the salmon and the steelhead, after a good hearty fight, make their way into fisherman's boats, to the glorious sunsets of Arcadia Bluffs - Lake Michigan is a magnificent sea of crystal clear blue water. To own a piece of that shoreline - now that is heaven on earth.
So how about it? Ready to own your own slice of paradise?
It's always a rare occasion when my husband and I find time for dinner out, especially dinner for just the two of us. And it seems that every time we finally have that spare moment to go, we can't decide where to eat! Usually we end up at the local establishment in Lake Ann, the LA Cafe. Have yet to have a bad meal there. But for times that we really want a night on the town, here's a pretty thorough guide to some fabulous eateries.
Restaurant Guide
One of my favorite places, North Peak Brewing Co. in Traverse City. Excellent food, great beer and a guaranteed good time. There are so many wonderful establishments all over the map. I've yet to hit them all!
We live just up the road from the Lake Ann Pathway - a small run of cross country ski trails that take you past the rolling waters of the Platte River and the quiet solitude of Lake Ann, as well as few other smaller lakes. Our first winter here we decided to try cross country skiing - I mean, it's practically right out our back door - so why not give it shot? We borrowed some skis from friends and took to the trails. Given that my husband and I are fairly athletic, I assumed that we'd catch on quickly. Making assumptions is not a good idea when your feet are strapped into a pair of long skinny flat wooden sticks. Only now do I wish I had read the review of the Pathway at traverseguide.com that states: "It's not a good system for beginners". Yeah - information I could have used 3 years ago. See, there are all these hills. And these hills, although a great workout on the way up, they are scarey as blankety-blank on the way down. Because, see, there are these trees - EVERYWHERE - all along the path which at the time seemed no more that 6 inches wide! Thankfully, neither of us broke anything - although I was tempted to break the skis just to have an excuse to walk back to the car. Not long after that day, we bought snow shoes and absolutely love trekking through the snow rather than gliding (or in our case, tumbling).
For more information on the Lake Ann Pathway and the many other wonderful trails for snowshoeing and cross country I recommend this site which also includes a handy map of the area.
Cross Country Skiing
Here is a great trail for hiking, biking and blading enthusiasts and even offers some snowmobiling runs in the winter and of course, cross country skiing. Just west of Traverse City in Benzie County, this 22.3 mile path travels from the quaint Lake Michigan town of Frankfort on down to the crossroads of Thompsonville, home to the ever-popular Crystal Mountain ski resort.
The Betsie Valley Trail
For those of you trying to figure out what exactly there is to do once you get here, check out this link. It comes from our friends at Traverse Magazine (which is highly recommended for great coffee table reading - beautiful photography and interesting articles every month). Anyhow, this link will give you lots of information and articles concerning the Traverse region.
Destination Northern Michigan
And I should clarify - when I write "what exactly there is to do once you get here" - what I really want to say is - nothing. Do nothing. Just enjoy it. The blue waters of Lake Michigan, the sugar sands of Sleeping Bear Dunes, the rolling hills of Leelanau County - just soak it all in and soon you'll understand why this region is such a great place to be!
When we first decided to move to the Traverse City area, we got a lot of guff from friends and family. “Why do you want to live way up there?” “Are you crazy? That’s in the middle of nowhere!” Well, technically it’s not in the middle of nowhere, it’s just tucked away in its own space. And it’s a space we love. We vacationed here nearly every summer for many years, all summer long. Our favorite vacation resort – our canvas tent on state land near a quiet river. AAAHHH the serenity. So we got to thinking - here we are living in southern Michigan, fighting with traffic every stinking day on that awful stretch of US-23 that is ALWAYS under construction, and all the while we’re dreaming of that spot on the Betsie River - the crisp cool water is quietly rolling past, the campfire is warm and crackling a tune, the truck radio is softly crooning some Country Gold, and me - I’m completely at ease in my camp chair soaking it all in. Then a horn blares, shaking me from my dreamy stupor and I’m slamming my brakes, nearly missing the rear end of the car in front of me because of yet another car accident! Finally, we’d had enough and decided - let’s live where we love to be! So we did it. We bought a house and moved “up north” and have never looked back. We live where we vacation – how great is that?
